Another postcard arrived his morning. The picture is Francisco de Goya's The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters and Leonard’s message on the reverse reads:



I’ll translate for those who cannot read his handwriting:



'It is my experience that an essay grows inside its writer - imperceptibly at first, like an embryo...But in due course it rarely leaves at least the range of the mind's eye. Few hours pass without a solicitous act of monitoring an increasingly sturdy piece of work that has been in some strange measure writing itself...'

Another pearl of wisdom from Leonard, who is mindful of my exams next week and I suspect that he is worrying about them more than I am!
